Perfect 12 Days Vietnam Itinerary – Complete Travel Guide and Tips (Updated Dec 2022)
Be ready with some cultural shocks coming your way, if you are planning Vietnam. Well, what I mean is in a good way. Always expect the unexpected in Vietnam! You do not need to worry, just open your mind, be ready to accept and learn their culture, you will surely fall in love with this country.
The country is home to stunningly beautiful landscapes and beaches, as well as an incredibly diverse population. From the bustling cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to the breathtaking mountain ranges and tropical islands, Vietnam has something for everyone. With its rich history and captivating culture, Vietnam is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Asia.
Vietnam is a country of spectacular natural beauty and historical importance. The country stretches for nearly 1,000 miles along the Southeast Asia coastline, from the Gulf of Tonkin in the north to the South China Sea in the south. Vietnam is geographically divided into north, central and south, each region has its own unique experience to share and learn from. Northern part has a lot of ancient history and culture to tell as compared to the southern part. But you will find many stories and history across Vietnam.

Visa
Good news is that Vietnam has scrapped a negative RT-PCR report. All you need is your Visa, Passport, travel health insurance and Hotel Booking. You can apply for e-visa online via their portal and receive it within 3-4 days time.
How to Apply for Vietnam's e-Visa:
Prepare the required materials: One 4×6 passport photo in .jpg format, One photo in .jpg format of your passport data page, Your temporary address in Vietnam and points of entry and exit.
Click this link or access https://immigration.gov.vn/ and go to ‘E-visa Issuance’ then click on the link for ‘Outside Vietnam foreigners’.
Upload your .jpg images (passport data page and passport photo) and fill out the required fields on the form completely. Submit your form.
Pay the e-Visa fee of 25 USD. Copy down the document code provided. You will receive the e-visa in your mail and keep the copy along while you travel.
Insurance requirement:
Purchase medical/travel insurance that covers COVID-19 treatment with a minimum coverage of $10,000. You can look out for insurance online or from an agent. Check out https://www.policybazaar.com/ Ideally it will roughly cost you around 900-1500 Rs. per person.
At the moment, the popularity of visas on arrival to Vietnam can’t be denied. It’s considered among the most popular ways to get a visa to Vietnam at present. The Visa on arrival process is simple: after obtaining an approval letter from the Vietnamese Immigration Department, you present this letter and your passport to an immigration officer upon arrival in Vietnam, pay the relevant fees, and receive your visa stamp. But this is limited to people who want multiple entry or stay for some other reason.
But a visa on arrival is not available for every country. You need to prior check whether your country is eligible for a visa on arrival to Vietnam.
Quick Tip: Make sure to apply for the e-visa at least 15 days prior to your trip date. Because if there are any delays in visa approval you should have some buffer time for the same.
Flights
You will have many Flight options to Vietnam from India. The cheapest ones are Vietjet and Indigo, the price would roughly range from 7000 to 15000 one-way depending on your luggage and booking date for travel. Ideally the round trip would cost you not more than 20,000 INR per person. Vietjet has recently started direct flights from Mumbai to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. Most of the airlines fly from India twice or thrice weekly, so you get many options to pick from. With more flights coming in and out of the country, it is easier than ever to get to this amazing destination.
Most international flights arrive at one of the three airports in Vietnam: Hanoi, Da Nang, or Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). Destinations such as Nha Trang and Phu Quoc also receive direct international flights. Majority of the travelers prefer their trip southbound so they start with Ho Chi Minh moving to central Danang and North in Hanoi. I have planned my trip northbound, so I started off from Hanoi and Danang and Ho Chi Minh. The round international trip cost me around roughly 15k as I had opted for check-in luggage which is an add-on service for VietJet airlines. If you are flying Vietjet they are very affordable only if you have 7kg cabin luggage but if you have check-in luggage you will have to upgrade your package. Also, if you are flying vietjet be prepared for delays, or flight cancellation, as they have just started operations in Mumbai so they are at the adaptive stage. They do not offer free water. If you want to drink water make sure to take a bottle from the airport or buy one in plane which is expensive.
Within Vietnam, traveling by plane is often the most convenient means to reach far-away destinations. Several domestic airlines like bamboo, vietjet, vietnam airlines offer flights within the country, tickets can be purchased online or at the airport. Flights are typically short – around an hour or two – are usually reasonably priced, but fares may escalate on public holidays. I would suggest planning your itinerary beforehand, just as I did. As we started northbound we booked our first internal flight from Hanoi to Danang and Danang to Ho Chi Minh. Both domestic transfers were booked with Bamboo Airlines which was quite affordable and the check-in luggage upgrade was also at a minimal fee. Both flights cost me around 6k which fitted my budget. The plus point of booking internal flights was it was quick and saved a lot of time. If you are having limited days in hand would suggest to have internal transfer via flights or if you are looking for budget transfer you can always opt for their bus service, but be ready to spend the entire night in transfer. This would cost you hardly 1000-2000 INR per trip.
If you want to save some extra bugs make sure to pre-plan and book tickets well in advance. Also, look for offers on cards and other online platforms. I got good offer deals on kayak.com and Skyscanner, do check them out before booking on other platforms.
Currency
It is always good to hear when Indian currency is stronger, isn’t it? – One Indian Rupee is equal to nearly Three hundred and fifty Vietnamese Dong. The official currency of Vietnam is the Dong. The most popular denominations in Vietnam at present are VND 1,000, 2,000, 5,000; VND 10,000, 20,000, and 50,000; VND 100,000, 50,000, and 200,000.
The best option is to convert the Indian currency to USD and further exchange them with local gold shops as they give the best rates. The exchange rate between the U.S. Dollar and Dong is about 1 USD=2,336,000 Dong. We roughly got around 2,650,000 VND for 100 USD at gold shops. This conversion rate will keep changing at different jewelry shops and cities so the best way is to look for 2-3 options before taking a final call.
Credit cards are not as commonly accepted in Vietnam as they are in other countries, so it is best to have cash on hand when traveling in Vietnam. Most ATMs in Vietnam support foreign debit cards allowing transactions up to VND 2,000,000 or VND 4,000,000 for daily limits, depending on the bank, on ATMs overseas. When making ATM withdrawals, remember that you may be charged with withdrawal fees or foreign currency exchange fees by your bank.
Money Exchange
Airports: At the majority of international airports in Vietnam, money exchange is possible at both arrival and departure halls. But it is expensive.
Banks: Vietnamese banks will typically be open on weekdays and Saturdays from 8 AM to 4 PM. For money exchange in banks, you need to show your passport and immigration visa to the respective bank executive. Check after the exchange of money for any damaged notes. But you must be sure to check the lunch hours and holidays before you go to ensure you don’t end up empty-handed.
Hotels: A few larger hotels also offer money exchange at their reception for their guests. But make sure to check other options first.
Gold shops: It's a good option for exchanging currency if you go to gold shops that are capable of exchanging currency legally because they often provide higher exchange rates. But not all gold shops in Vietnam are approved to exchange currency.
Best Time to Visit Vietnam
The best time to visit Vietnam generally depends on what you want to do. If you’re interested in exploring the country’s natural beauty, then the spring or autumn (January to June) months are your best bet, as temperatures are pleasant and rainfall is moderate. If you’re looking for some sun and beach time, then late winter through early summer (November to April) is ideal. Keep in mind that during the peak holiday season – from June through August- prices will be higher and many places will be crowded.
I won’t recommend visiting Vietnam during the monsoon season. The rain can be torrential and make traveling difficult. Plus many of the tourist attractions are closed due to the weather.
Transportation
Public transportation is the lifeblood of Vietnam’s cities. Bus, train, and taxi networks weave in and out of each other, connecting neighborhoods and commercial districts. The quality of service varies, but it’s generally affordable and efficient.
Taxis: Are also plentiful and relatively inexpensive, although they can be difficult to find during rush hour. Best way to book a cab online is to download Grab, it is the most popular cab app across Vietnam. Though it can be a little expensive during peak hours or airport drops, if you are not looking for a private tour you can always grab a cab. If you’re traveling solo, the best option is to grab a bike, it comes at half the price as compared to the cab fare.
Buses: They are the cheapest way to get around, but they can be crowded and often make stops in the middle of nowhere. I traveled by bus from Hanoi airport to Old Quarters within 140 INR which would have cost me 2000 – 2500 if it was a private cab. And also opted for the same while exploring a few city sights. The Bus Express 86 Hanoi takes about 55 minutes depending on where you want to get off (in normal traffic). The frequency of bus 86 operation is about 25 – 30 minutes per trip.
Motorbike: The most popular way to get around is by motorbike. Motorbikes can be rented and many hotels and guesthouses have them for rent. This makes getting around quick and easy. But it is important to be aware of your surroundings at all times when riding in Vietnam. I have rented bikes in two major cities, and it cost me 500 Rs per day as rent. It is really cheap as compared to buses too, as you will save a lot of time and it is convenient to find parking spots across the city.
Trains: Are a great way to cover long distances without breaking the bank. But do not expect some fancy train coaches, it is not Switzerland though it gives the best scenic view while you are crossing borders.
Budget
When budgeting for a trip to Vietnam, it’s important to remember that you can spend as little or as much as you want. However, on average, travelers spend about 2000-2500 INR a day. This includes your accommodation, food, drinks, and sightseeing. If you plan to do a lot of shopping, you may want to budget more.
Accommodation: Hostels and homestays are a great option and can be found for around 800-1000 INR per night. If you are looking for something a little more luxurious, hotels can be found starting at about 2500 to 4000 INR per night.
SIM Card: This is a must, as it helps you ease out navigation and local calls and messages. I had got unlimited data usage for 21 days from Viettel shop. This cost me around 20 dollars that is 1600 INR.
Food: When it comes to food, street stalls offer the best value for money, with a meal costing as little as 150-300 INR. Local restaurants are also great options, with main courses typically priced at around 800-1200 INR. However, if you’re looking for something a bit more luxurious, expect to pay upwards of 2000-4000 INR per dish.
Ride: Local buses are very affordable at 5,000-7,000 dong per ride (about 20-40 INR), but they can be crowded and uncomfortable. Taxis are slightly more expensive but provide a more comfortable experience. Expect to pay around 100,000 dong for a taxi ride within the city center (about 300-500 INR).
Activities: Roughly internal transfer in private 7-9 seaters would cost you around 1200- 2000 INR one way per person. A boat trip in Ha Long bay with activities will cost around 1200-2000 per person. A full day of hiking will cost around 800-1000 INR. A cooking class in Vietnam is a great way to learn about the local cuisine and costs around 1000-2000 INR. Approximately you can pre-book your day tours like cruises, water activities, Ba Na Hill park, cu chi tunnels and more. This way you can dedicate the rest amount for skybar, sundowners near beaches and more.
Basic Stay
There are many stay options in Vietnam. First, homestays are a great way to experience the culture and hospitality of Vietnam. You can live with a local family and learn about their traditions and daily life. Homestays are cheaper, but you may not have all the amenities that you would find in a hotel. But there are homestay apartments, where you can have a private room to yourself and all amenities from kichentelle to the washing area to the en-suite bathroom and more. Second, hotels which will have common accommodation like any other hotel in your area. Both offer excellent service, great value for money, and stunning locations. Vietnam Itinerary for 12 Days
There are many places to cover in Vietnam, and it can be difficult to know where to start. If you’re looking for a well-rounded trip, north to south is the way to go. You’ll get to experience everything from mountainous landscapes and rice paddies in the north to bustling cities and incredible beaches in the south. With this 12-days (Total 11 nights & 12 days) Vietnam itinerary, you’ll get a taste of all that Vietnam has to offer.

Day 1- 2 Hanoi (2 nights)
The first city on the Vietnam itinerary would be Hanoi. Hanoi is a vibrant city with an exciting history, and there are plenty of attractions to keep visitors busy. This city is alive with energy at all hours of the day and night. Due to COVID-19 restrictions you will find markets and streets to be dull after 8:00 pm, but during weekends they are fun.
Start your day by exploring the vibrant streets of Hanoi by renting a bike for 500 Rs per day. Do not worry you will not need an international license to do so, our Indian license would be enough.
One of the most popular places to visit in Hanoi is the Museum of Vietnamese History. This museum is located in the heart of the city and features exhibits that chronicle the history of Vietnam from prehistoric times to the present day. Another must-see attraction in Hanoi is the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. This imposing structure is dedicated to Vietnam’s founder and features several artifacts from his life. The best way to explore these sites is to either explore on your own with google maps, or book a bike tour or walking tour.
Be sure to check out Train Street, where the trains run right down the middle of the street. Make sure you learn about the timings, during weekdays the train comes after 9:00 PM but on weekends there are more frequent trains passing that street.
Then head to the famous Hoan Kiem Lake for a relaxing stroll. The best way to get the Hanoi sky view is to sit in a sky bar during happy hours. There are plenty of trendy sky bars too where you can sip cocktails while enjoying panoramic views of the cityscape.
In the late evening, venture out to the lively night market, where you can find everything from souvenirs to street food. As night falls, explore Hanoi’s buzzing nightlife scene. Once you’ve had your fill of shopping and eating, it’s time for some fun! Check out one of its many lounges.

Day 3 HaLong Bay (1 night)
Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist destinations for the Vietnam itinerary. The bay is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, crystal-clear water, and thousands of towering islands. Visitors can explore the bay by boat, kayak, or cruise. There are plenty of activities available here, such as island hopping, visiting floating villages, and caving.
If you’re looking for a more relaxing experience, you can also take a cruise around the bay to enjoy the views from your boat. There are plenty of onboard and other cruising activities you can do such as cooking, swimming, sunbathing, and fishing.
Day 4 Ninh Binh (1 Day tour)
If you’re looking for a unique adventure, add Ninh Binh to the Vietnam itinerary. The province is home to many ancient temples and caves, including the famous Trang An Grottoes. These grottoes are a series of caves and tunnels formed by the Dinh Mountain Range and the Red River. They are a popular tourist destination, offering visitors stunning views of the countryside and an opportunity to explore the area’s natural wonders.
Ninh Binh is also well known for its rice paddies, which stretch out across the landscape like a patchwork quilt. The paddies are a beautiful sight, especially during harvest season when they are filled with bright yellow rice stalks. There are also plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities in Ninh Binh, including hiking, biking, and kayaking. Be sure to check out this amazing destination!
You can take a night flight from Hanoi to Da Nang the way I did, as the majority of the flights which had cheaper deals were post 9:00pm. So we had planned all internal domestic transfers at night time.
Add a day or free day: Roughly 5-6 hours run from Hanoi can reach you at Sapa, a former hill station valley. If you are planning a budget trip, then do miss out on an overnight train ride via the provincial capital, Lao Cai to reach Sapa. Or you can opt for bus or shuttle vans from Hanoi city which can be a little expensive as compared to the train. The best time to visit Sapa is in September and October which gives the best splendid views of rice terraces.
Day 5-7 Da Nang (3 nights)
The next thing on the Vietnam itinerary is Da Nang. The journey from Hanoi to Da Nang is a popular one with many tourists opting to take the flight rather than the bus or train. The flight is just over an hour-long, and the views of the countryside below are stunning. There are several airlines that fly this route, so finding a flight that suits your schedule and budget should be easy.
Da Nang is Vietnam’s third-largest city and is located on the central coast. This city is home to some amazing scenery and historical sites. If you’re a fan of nature, be sure to check out the Marble Mountains, which are a few miles from the city. These mountains are made up of several limestone peaks that are covered in jade green foliage. If you’re interested in history, visit the Cham Museum, which contains artifacts from the Champa civilization that once ruled this region. You can also visit the nearby Monkey Mountain, where you’ll find a temple dedicated to Hanuman, the Indian monkey god.
The Han River winds its way through the city and is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike to take a walk or enjoy a leisurely boat ride. Da Nang is also home to several theme parks, including the popular Asia amusement park. The Sun Wheel, as it is called, marks the entrance to Asia Park – a large amusement park in Da Nang. Do not miss this. The park also features a variety of rides and attractions, game zone, food court and more. If you don’t like crowds then Asia Park will be a perfect place for some evening activities.
You can dedicate one entire day to explore the Ba Na Hills- home to the Golden Bridge. The Bana Hills is located about 30 kilometers from Da Nang and is a popular tourist destination, thanks in part to the Golden Bridge. The bridge spans 150 meters across a valley and is made of glass and steel. The access to this sight is only through Sun World Theme Park via the longest cable car. This is a must do thing in Da Nang, start early by reaching the base which is 45 minutes from the city. This theme park features many attractions, rides, adventure and gardens. It has quickly become a popular selfie spot for tourists visiting the area.
End the day by taking a walk by the My Khe Beach is located about 20 minutes ride from Da Nang and is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam. The beach is well known for its clear water, white sand, and soft waves.
If time permits you can take a ride around the roads of Son Tra Peninsula to catch the marvelous views of My Khe Beach and the Hai Van Pass to the north. The Linh Ung Pagoda is the largest pagoda of scale and artistic architecture. It is so famous for the huge statue of Lady Buddha – 67m high.And if you’ve got more time to spare, drive all the way around the peninsula on the coastal road. The scenery is picturesque.
Add a day or free day: Travelers can ride the bus or hire a private car from Da Nang to Hue, a 2 hours ride from the city. If you want to spend just the day explore the Citadel, riverside and central town by walking or hiring a cycle for the day. For visiting the Imperial Tombs, taxis are available, it is approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) from Hue. The tombs are the elaborate resting places of the Nguyen dynasty, who ruled over Vietnam from 1802 until 1945.
Day 8 Hoi An (1 night)
After exploring Danang, you could move to the next destination in the Vietnam itinerary- Hoi An. The journey from Danang to Hoi An is a beautiful one and can be done by cab or car within 1 hour. The ancient road between the two cities is well-known for its stunning views and makes for a perfect day trip. The drive passes through some of Vietnam’s most picturesque countryside. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, so be sure to take your time and enjoy the view.
Hoi An is located in the Quang Nam province, bordering the East Sea. It reflects the architecture, which is a mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese styles.
The old town of Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most tourists visit Hoi An for its old town, which retains a strong colonial atmosphere with narrow streets and old houses. The trade port’s history has also left it with many temples and assembly halls. There are also several museums, including a museum dedicated to traditional woodblock printing techniques.
One of the best ways to experience Hoi An is to wander through the old town at night. The lanterns hanging from the buildings create a magical atmosphere. A bicycle is a great way to explore the surrounding area, and there are plenty of cycle rental shops around town.
Quick Tip: If you like clicking images make sure you do it in the afternoon, as the streets are empty and you will have a lot of free space to roam around. At night the entire town is filled with tourist crowds, so it gets difficult to move around with a bicycle too.
The lively night market is a great place to find souvenirs or enjoy some delicious local food. Banh Mi Phuoc is a must-try dish in Hoi An – it’s a sandwich made with pork pate, pork slices, homemade mayonnaise, pickled vegetables, and fresh herbs.
You can explore Cam Thanh Village also known as Coconut village, just 10 mins drive from Hoi An old town. Do not miss this opportunity if you are in Hoi An, it is a must visit place. Soak in a dense green foliage of coconut forest on your basket boat. And get ready to go crazy on the coconut water. The package would generally include pick and drop and basic activities listed below.

A number of tour operators offer bamboo boats that take visitors down the river and through the village’s narrow alleys. This is a great way to see the sights and get an up-close look at everyday life in Hoi An. Be sure to ask your guide about local customs and traditions – you’ll learn a lot about Vietnamese culture and history.
Day 9-11 Ho Chi Minh (3 nights)
Next on the Vietnam itinerary is Ho Chi Minh City, formerly called Saigon. It is a beautiful city in Vietnam easily accessible by internal domestic flight from Da Nang. The flight only takes about an hour and half, so it’s a convenient way to get around the country.
Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam and it’s also the most populous city in the entire Southeast Asia region. The city is located on the banks of the Saigon River. HCMC is also known by its former name, Saigon.
Start your exploration at the city’s many museums, including the Museum of Vietnamese History, which traces the country’s history from prehistory to the present day.
You’ll also find plenty to see and do in Ho Chi Minh City’s lively neighborhoods, where you can wander through colorful markets, sample delicious food, and admire traditional Vietnamese architecture. There are also several cathedrals located close to the market, which is worth visiting. And don’t forget to take a stroll along the Saigon River for some amazing views of the cityscape.
The city comes alive after dark, with locals and tourists alike exploring the vibrant streets and markets. One of the most popular spots is the walking street near Nguyen Hue Boulevard. This area is packed with restaurants, cafes, and bars, so you can easily find something to your taste. Grab a beer and enjoy loud music, dance along the beats and drink beer with the locals. Another great option is the Ben Thanh Night Market, located in the heart of downtown. Here you’ll find everything from souvenirs to street food, so it’s a great place to wander around and take in the atmosphere.
If you’re looking for a place to let loose, there are plenty of pubs and lounges to party in. The pubs are always lively and fun, and there are always fun things happening. The lounges have a relaxed atmosphere and a great selection of cocktails. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.
Day Tour - Mekong Delta River and Cu Chi tunnels
While exploring Ho Chi Minh city, be sure to take a day tour of the Mekong Delta River and Cu Chi tunnels. The Mekong Delta is a region in southern Vietnam that is known for its beautiful scenery and waterways. The Mekong Delta is Vietnam’s largest and most fertile region. You will see rice paddies, villages, temples, and stunning nature scenes along the way. This area was once a major battleground during the Vietnam War, and today you can visit some of the sites that were once used by the military.
The Cu chi tunnels are a network of tunnels that were used by the Viet Cong during the war as hiding places, hospitals, supply routes, and bases. These tunnels are now open to tourists and offer a fascinating glimpse into life during wartime. The highlight of the tour is crawling through the narrow tunnels that were used by the Viet Cong during the war. The tunnels are very dark and humid, and it can be difficult to breathe in some sections.
Add a day or free day: You can explore Da Lat which is a 7 hours ride by bus from Ho Chi Minh or 1 hour via flight. Sleeper buses are available for you from Ho Chi Minh City, while neighboring Mui Ne and Nha Trang are just a few hours away by car or shuttle van if you are spending 2 days here. Popular spots are Elephant Falls, neighboring K’ho villages, or Tuyen Lam Lake. The town itself is easy to navigate on google maps by walking or by renting a bike.
Day 12 Back to Routine
Fly back to your home town, if your flight is at night, you can utilize the day time to explore your pending list to do, or shop at the Sài Gòn Square, it is a must, you will get all trending clothes, footwear and more at this place. Make sure to use your bargain power and be ready to add more to your luggage.
Few Tips When Traveling To Vietnam
Here are a few tips on how to plan your Vietnam itinerary and when traveling in Vietnam:
- Decide what you want to see and do in Vietnam. Do your research on different tour companies before booking anything.
- Make sure you have your visa or visa on arrival documentation sorted out before you go
- Prepare yourself for extreme weather conditions. The north is cool and dry, while the south is hot and humid. Pack accordingly.
- Be respectful of the culture and customs of Vietnam. Remember that you are a guest in Vietnam, so be polite and courteous.
- When visiting temples or other religious sites, be sure to dress appropriately. Cover you shoulders and knees inside the temple.
- Learn some basic phrases in Vietnamese. This will help you communicate with locals and get by in everyday situations.
- Be aware of your surroundings at all times and take precautions against being targeted by thieves or scammers.
- Drink only bottled water and avoid eating raw fruits or vegetables unless they have been washed with purified water first.
- Reduce your plastic use. Dispose of your trash properly.
